Prior to visiting Gugulethu and Khayelitsha, Grassroute Tours take groups to the District Six Museum, identifies the different classes of township living and stops at the black township of Langa.

Coloured Townships

A stop at another craft stall with forceful sellers later, and Grassroute Tour Guide, Thibaz, is driving out of Langa. He wants to show the group the coloured township across the road. First impressions reveal that it doesn't really seem like a township at all, so improved is the housing compared to Langa.

Thibaz sheds light on such a marked difference. “Coloured people were favoured under the apartheid and the 'Coloured Housing Preference Bill'. The government built proper housing for many coloured communities.” As a result, there are far fewer shacks in coloured townships than there are in the black townships. Thibaz reveals that there is also a difference in the problems affecting black and coloured townships.
