Japanese dishes are well-liked overseas because they are so healthy. Even Madonna is reputed to have her own sushi chef. Japanese food when served has a clean and simple presentation. But is it easy to make?
On NHK World TV on Sky Channel 516, Harumi Kurihara shows viewers how simple it is to prepare a Japanese meal at home. A famous cookery writer, she has published more than 90 titles. Her English book: Harumi’s Japanese Cooking won her the Best Cookbook of the Year 2004 title at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards.
Harumi Kurihara, known as the “charismatic housewife” in Japan, likes putting a spin on traditional Japanese cooking. Her inventive style is inspired by incorporating new flavours from other parts of the world. The result is not a strange fusion but a newly improved version of a Japanese traditional dish. For instance, her latest episode on how to cook an Okonomiyaki (Japanese pancake) uses a seafood mix and dried bonito flakes that dance on the ‘pizza’. It looks absolutely mouth-watering.
