Margin Call is a 2011 motion picture written and directed by J.C. Chandor, and starring Kevin Spacey, Stanley Tucci, Paul Bettany, Demi Moore, Simon Baker, Jeremy Irons and Zachary Quinto. Crackling along with a crisp channel of communication, the movie takes place during the financial crisis and collapse of 2007-2010 at a fictional investment bank that looks a lot like Lehman Brothers [whom after bankruptcy was acquired by Barclays]. The film focuses on the words and actions of a core group throughout a tension-filled day [and night] in the life [and death] of the firm.
A margin call is issued by a broker when a margin put up in a margin account is below the mandated minimum margin amount. The investor then has the choice and decision to either increase the margin that’s been deposited or close out the position. If a margin call occurs unexpectedly, it can cause a domino effect of selling that shall lead to other margin calls which will effectively crash a certain class of assets. It usually occurs as a result of an adverse change in the market value of the leveraged assets.
Be Careful
