I wrote a novel, now how do I get it published?
Many new writers have asked me how to get their novel published and I always begin by asking if they have any previous publishing credits. Usually the answer is no, in which case I always recommend they search out some literary magazines and start submitting short stories. Not only does this give them the necessary credibility when approaching publishing houses, it also gives them submission experience.
And unfortunately, the rejection experience.
The submission process helps writers develop the patience needed to survive in the literary world. Writing is highly competitive and only a very small percentage of submitted stories actually make their way onto the page of print magazines. It's no different with publishing houses, maybe even worse.
Where to Start
There are several literary magazines for writers to send their work to. Places for Writers is a website that lists most of them, as well as specific calls for submissions and writing contests, all open to submissions from Canadian writers.
